Does My Mazda Have Apple CarPlay? (A Year-by-Year Guide)

If you drive a Mazda and you're not sure whether it has Apple CarPlay, you're not alone. Mazda was later than most brands to add it, and which Mazda cars have it depends on the year, the model, and whether it was fitted at the factory or added later. 

The good news is that even if your Mazda doesn't have CarPlay, there's almost always a way to add it.

The fastest way to check

Before we get into years and models, the simplest test takes about thirty seconds.

Look at your Mazda's centre screen and see if there's an Apple CarPlay or Android Auto icon in the menu. 

If there is, you're set with Mazda CarPlay already. 

If you want to be certain, plug your iPhone into the USB port with a good cable and see if CarPlay launches. If it connects, your car already has it.

If nothing happens and there's no CarPlay icon anywhere in the menus, your Mazda most likely doesn't have it from the factory. That's not the end of the story though, because most Mazdas can have it added. 

When did Mazda add Apple CarPlay

Mazda's infotainment system, known as Mazda Connect (or MZD Connect), first arrived in Australia in early 2014. For the first few years it didn't support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto at all, which frustrated a lot of owners while other brands were already offering it.

That changed in late 2018. 

From then on, Mazda began fitting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on new cars, starting with the updated CX-9 and rolling out across the range on later updates. At the same time, Mazda offered an official upgrade for existing cars, so owners of earlier Mazda Connect models could have it added too.

So as a rough rule: if your Mazda was built from 2019 onwards, there's a good chance it already has CarPlay. 

If it was built between 2014 and 2018, it probably shipped without it, but it can be upgraded. 

And if it's older than 2014, it uses an earlier system that needs a different approach.

Let's break those three groups down.

Group 1: 2019 onwards - you probably already have it

If your Mazda is a 2019 model or newer, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were most likely fitted at the factory. This rolled out model by model through 2019, so a small number of early cars in this window still missed out.

The quickest way to confirm is the check above: look for the icon, or plug your phone in. If it's there, you're good to go. 

If for some reason your 2019-era car doesn't have it, it can still be added using the same upgrade as the group below.

Group 2: 2014 to 2018 - you don't have it, but you can add it

This is where most Mazda owners sit, and it's the sweet spot. If your car has the Mazda Connect screen (the interface that's often shown in red) but there's no CarPlay icon, your Mazda came out of the factory without it.

The good part is that every Mazda Connect car built from early 2014 onwards can have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added. 

It's a proper hardware and software upgrade, not a workaround, and it keeps all your factory features intact. Your steering wheel controls, reverse camera and the rest of the Mazda system all keep working exactly as before. You simply gain a CarPlay icon on your existing screen.

Group 3: Before 2014 - an older system, but still fixable

If your Mazda was built before 2014, it uses an older infotainment system that predates Mazda Connect. These cars can't take Mazda's official CarPlay upgrade, because the underlying system is different.

That doesn't mean you're stuck with the old radio. For these earlier Mazdas, the answer is a new head unit that replaces the factory radio entirely and brings modern wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to a car that never had the option. A 2009 to 2013 Mazda 3, for example, is a common one we upgrade this way.

Model-by-model quick guide

The years vary a little between models, but the pattern is generally the same across the range: Mazda Connect from around 2014 or 2015, factory CarPlay from late 2018, and everything in between able to be upgraded.

• Mazda 2: Mazda Connect from 2014. Cars from roughly 2014 to 2018 can be upgraded; later cars often have it factory.
• Mazda 3: Mazda Connect from 2014 on the BM and BN generations. Roughly 2014 to 2018 can be upgraded. The 2019-onward generation generally came with CarPlay.
• Mazda 6: Mazda Connect from 2014. Cars from around 2014 to 2018 can be upgraded, with factory CarPlay arriving from late 2018.
• Mazda CX-3: Mazda Connect from its 2015 launch. Roughly 2015 to 2018 can be upgraded.
• Mazda CX-5: One of the most common upgrades we do. Pre-2019 CX-5s typically shipped without CarPlay and can be upgraded, while 2019-onward cars usually have it factory.
• Mazda CX-8: Mazda Connect from its 2017 launch. Early cars can be upgraded.
• Mazda CX-9: The first Mazda to get CarPlay as standard, from the late-2018 update. Earlier CX-9s can be upgraded.
• Mazda MX-5 (ND): Mazda Connect from 2015. Cars from around 2015 to 2018 can be upgraded.

If your model and year fall into an "can be upgraded" window, that simply means your car has the right system and is ready for CarPlay to be added. Just remember to check the icon is always the easiest way to tell with your specific car.

Can I add Apple CarPlay to my Mazda?

For the vast majority of Mazdas, you can add Apple CarPlay to it.

If you've got a Mazda Connect car from 2014 onwards without CarPlay, you can add it with a software and USB hub upgrade that keeps everything factory. 

If you've got an older pre-2014 Mazda, you can add it with a new head unit.
